Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer's disease is an illness that causes the brain to actually shrink and is the most common form of dementia. Dementia affects a person's memory, mood, and behavior.
Alzheimer's disease usually affects people over 65. Besides the age factor, Alzheimer's disease can also be caused through head injury - people who have had an earlier serious head injury may be at higher risk. Also, women may have a higher risk of developing the disease than men.
Patients with Alzheimer’s disease have trouble with memory, speaking, learning, making judgments and planning. Some people feel restless and moody. Loss of memory commences with: forgetting newly learned information, then distant memories, factual knowledge, and finally procedural skills.
Family history is a key risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. People who have a brother, sister, or parent with Alzheimer's disease have a slightly higher chance of developing it themselves.
