Drinking recycled water for NASA

Here on Health and Fitness, we find there's nothing healthier and fitter than consuming the waste products of your own body.

Well, not drinking it straight from the source... as Wikipedia notes:

"Drinking the urine will only make one reingest the salts that have already been excreted by the kidneys. "

But it's mostly water, and it seems like a shame to just throw it away, contaminating perfectly fine drinking water with your waste.

Luckily, NASA wants to knock this problem out, and they've done so with a project that costs $250 million, a filtration system that turns urine, sweat and waste water back into drinking water.

Yes, the astronauts are ready to drink their pee. From the article in the NYT, astronauts are eager to get a sip of the stuff:

"As Sandra H. Magnus, one of the astronauts who will be among the first to drink water produced by the new system aboard the station, noted in a recent interview, our earthbound water has been endlessly filtered through bodies, evaporated and rained down again. “We drink recycled water every day,” she said, “on a little bit longer time scale.”"

John Schwartz, the reporter from the Times, tasted the water, pictured above, and found that it tasted like water. Hallelujah! Water! We have water!

While it may not have the 'medicinal benefits' touted by therapists in India and China, drinking recycled water is a good move for everyone, especially the environment. NASA figures that the system will pay for itself, in the reduced cost of sending additional water with the astronauts.

Health Benefits Of Artichokes

October 15th 2008 04:15
Artichoke

Artichokes, the big green buds used in cooking, are an excellent source of dietary magnesium, fibre, Vitamins A and C, folic acid, chromium, potassium, biotin, manganese, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine and a carbohydrate that is in the form of insulin.

As one of the most nutrient-packed vegetables on the planet, artichokes are hugely beneficial to our health. Diabetics who include artichokes in their diet can reap huge rewards from this vegetable because it contains a carbohydrate - in the form of insulin - which is a polysaccharide or starch that is handled by the body differently than other sugars. Thus artichokes are low in calories due to this carbohydrate, plus they are also extremely beneficial to diabetics. Insulin, as we know, improves blood sugar control in diabetes.

Artichoke

Other known health benefits of artichokes include the treatment of many liver diseases via its active ingredients found within the leaves called caffeoylquinic acids, such as cynarin. These compounds are found to have an choleretic effect that promotes the flow of bile and fat to and from the liver and treatment of hepatitis. Artichokes also helps relieve the symptoms of rheumatism, prevent atherosclerosis, alleviate various ailments of the kidneys, and help promote the growth of bifidobacteria within the digestive tract.

Artichoke

When choosing artichokes, the things to look out for are:

- tight leaves
- heavy for its size
- shows a deep green colour and when the leaves are rubbed together with an audible squeaking sound
- in season between March through May although they can be found throughout the year at most markets.

From time to time, I post frightening things on this blog, either deep-fried Twinkies or giant, 3-pound hamburgers. It's all a little bit of a laugh, and I get some sort of sick enjoyment at the idea that someone might actually be looking for health advice, and find an article about Twinkies.

Occasionally, though, I scare myself with what I post, and today is such a day.

Some clever health counselor bought a McDonalds Hamburger back in 1996, which, I assume you understand, is over 10 years ago.

Here's what it looks like today:

McDonalds Hamburger from 1996

It looks just like a McDonalds burger, with a patty and a bun. Why hasn't it decomposed? Why isn't it rotten?

"People always ask me - what did you do to preserve it ?

Nothing - it preserved itself.

Ladies, Gentleman, and children alike - this is a chemical food. There is absolutely no nutrition here.

Not one ounce of food value. Or at least value for why we are eating in the first place. "

Even more shocking is that the writer went to McDonalds in 2008 and bought a new burger, laid them side-by-side:

McDonalds hamburger from 2008 with one from 1996

Which one is which? Where's the ketchup?

The real question is: how long will it last? Will it never biodegrade? Will it still taste as good in 100 years? If so, perhaps we should consider packing our soldiers and hikers with packs of McDonalds hamburgers.
