Dubai newspaper publishes 9/11-themed anti-smoking advertisement

September 18th 2007 02:40
Found on Reddit, this ad was placed in The Khaleej Times, a paper in Dubai.

9/11 advertisement anti-smoking

Personally, I don't find the ad offensive, merely factual. It doesn't appear to slanting an opinion one way or the other, instead, it uses the tragedy to illuminate the effect of smoking.

Of course, one could argue that the paper is suggesting that the Sept. 11 attacks were a minor event compared to other, more deadly causes for death.

Most of the comments on the Reddit thread are preoccupied with the idea of smoking that, surprisingly, there hasn't been any infighting about the nature of the ad.

I like the advert. Better than the ones we get over here.

I think that it does make a valid point.
Possibly hard to run the same add in the West and not get an angry response from a noisy minority.

Clever ad, pointing out what could be considered the irrationlaity of many. So many jump up and down when people are murdered by terrorist attacks (and so we should), but very few jump up and down when thousands of people are being killed each year by money-hungry tobacco MNCs, and governments complicit in the spread of these toxic death sticks. Death mightn't be as instant and graphic as a death by plane wreck, but killing people slowly and softly by addictive cancer sticks, all the while profiting, is no less evil.

I think we need to concentrate on the message more so than the image (clever as it is)
