Exercise Ideas

This post is dedicated to helping you out with your exercise regime. How to make the most of it, and how to get motivated.

1) Exercise with a friend: From my own, first-hand experience I can say that exercising with another person of a similar fitness level is the most beneficial thing you can do to your exercise program. I go to athletics, ride and swim and when I’m with someone else, exercising is so much easier. When I do athletics, for example, my friend and I just chat as we jog our 3,000m run. It makes you forget about what you are doing, (like when you exercise to music but much better) and you can perform better and go further.

A fitness buddy is also a source of encouragement. You’re much less likely to slacken off – like slowing down your run - if you are with someone else because of this and also because of the competition that can form between you two. Whether you blatantly notice the difference or not, just time yourself doing a workout with and without a suitable buddy and you’ll see how much better you can perform with someone else. Psychologists call this phenomenon – Social Facilitation.

2) Get motivated: I know it’s hard to get on the treadmill after a long day at uni or work, but as I have mentioned in an earlier post, your fatigue and slight depression from the day’s events mean that this is the time you should exercise the most. Like most, I have struggled to get motivated after such a day but trust me, after your workout you’ll feel 100 % again! Way better than you were before you started.

Exercise is easy. No equipment required.

3) Find a time that suits you: Some people, like my elder sister, find the best time to exercise is first thing in the morning. You can get up early, put on the runners and go for a walk/run before breakfast. Come back and you’re ready to start the day, energized and refreshed, much better than that grogginess you were feeling getting out of bed right!? Other people prefer to exercise at night, as that’s the only time convenient to them. Either way, you’ll burn the same amount of calories and be benefiting your health. Although, I much prefer to exercise in the morning because firstly, if I don’t do it then I’ll never get around to doing it, secondly, it’s the best start to the day! I find that when I exercise in the mornings, I don’t need that morning coffee to kick-start my brain and wake me up.

4) Anyone can do it! You don’t need a treadmill, step machine or weights to keep yourself fit and healthy. Just go outside for a walk. It’s the simplest thing in the world to do and is absolutely free. Sometimes I think that people believe that exercise is inaccessible for some reason, as not nearly enough people partake in it. If you have a pair of functioning legs or arms you can keep yourself looking and feeling good. Get out there!

Of course, diet plays a big role in any exercise regime. If you’re a chocoholic but you exercise like mad and ‘burn it off’ this means nothing, it is detrimental to your health. Even though you may not appear overweight your insides won’t be in good condition. But more on diet later…

It is always nicer exercising with a friend - pasts the time quicker...although my husband much prefers to just be with his ipod when working out

Nah I reckon with someone else is way better than music (when you're doing something that allows you to chat also). I get really sick of my music, even my music videos...

Very helpful.... thank you!

I think my main problem is I never used to have to watch what I eat or do exercise and now it's all caught up and it's so hard to switch lifestyles!

Exactly Chantal!

I hope you are telling your kids this! (Or will do if the opportunity arises). It is so hard to change lifestyles. My parents are a perfect example: hadn't exercised properly in 20 years and now they whinge and ask why they're not losing weight.

If you've adopted a certain way of living (and so has your body and metabolism) its very hard to shake it off... but you'll get there eventually! Keep at it!
