Lance Armstrong

Testicular cancer survivor and champion cyclist, Lance Armstrong, has announced he will be making a comeback to professional cycling with plans to win an eighth Tour de France in 2009.

The 36 year-old American famously overcame an aggressive form of testicular cancer before embarking on his remarkable run of Tour de France victories - the most prestigious and arduous cycling event in the world.

Why would a sportsman like Armstrong risk harming his legacy by coming out of retirement to compete against guys much younger than himself and in a gruelling sport which he hasn't competed in since 2005?

"It is in order to raise awareness of the global cancer burden." said Lance Armstrong.

"This year alone, nearly eight million people will die of cancer worldwide. It's now time to address cancer on a global level." he added.

Since his retirement in 2005, he has devoted much of his energy running the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a charity dedicated to combating cancer. Regardless of how well, or not so well, he does on his return to the event he dominated for seven years, Armstrong will still remain an inspirational figure for fellow cancer survivors, those undergoing treatment for cancer and the general public.

A picture to turn you off steroid abuse

September 5th 2008 04:11
Ripped on steroids

Sure, on this website, we're all about being healthy and fitness-y, but it's easy to get obsessed and go too far. Life is all about balance and knowing yourself - unfortunately, our society allows easy physical fixes. Plastic surgery, body-shaping drugs allow people to be people they aren't.

For example, you're a thin guy. Enjoy it! Eat big sundaes and not put on any weight!

Sadly, some guys might feel insecure about their size, working out like mad to put on some bulk, and then take it one step further, going after the steroid dream. Inject yourself with some hormones, work out, bulk up fast.

The picture above is from a guy that went a little overboard on the steroids. Sure, he's all cut in that picture, but the following two pictures show a side effect, namely, terrible, terrible acne that disfigured him long after he stopped using.

Wired points out that the biggest demographic for steroid abuse is not athletes, but 30-year-old white dudes.

"Contrary to the steroid-user image epitomized by pro athletes like Barry Bonds, the survey of over 2,000 male steroid users found that the typical user was "30 years old, well-educated, and earning an above average income in a white collar occupation.""

The user from the picture, though, suffered from the shrunken testicles and damaged sperm that comes with steroid abuse., and once he stopped using, the muscle melted away like ice cream on a hot summer day.

Some might say don't click on this link, but, really, it's not that bad.

Viagra
Viagra: The performance boosting drug

As the title states, anti-doping authorities are becoming a bit worried that elite athletes are using the impotency drugs such as Viagra and Cialis to boost their performances - just not in the way they were intended, unfortunately.

Drugs such as viagra is just a brand name while its generic name is actually Sildenafil citrate, a compound which not only treats male erectile dysfunction but also aids the delivery of oxygen to muscles.

Viagra

It is thought that the help in delivery of oxygen to muscles could be beneficial for athletes in elite competition, at altitude or in polluted environments like the Beijing Olympics. And this might help explain the increasing traces of sildenafil in the urine tests of athletes.

While it can't be ruled out that some athletes might really be using the drug to boost sexual performance (erectile dysfunction typically affects elder males and not the young and fit athletic types), the reason why an athlete might be lacking sexual prowess is because of other doping agents they could be taking.

The World Anti-Doping Agency is already studying these claims but the outcome is unlikely to be heard until after the Beijing Olympic Games this year.

I don't see how running with a stiffy would shave milliseconds off a sprinter's time in the 100 metres dash! It might help with the photo finish though if that's what it came down to! What about swimming? Perhaps it will give 'buoyancy' a whole new meaning? [abc.net.au]

American sports compliation video

February 22nd 2008 09:50
There's no better motivation to get in shape than by watching a montage of the most dramatic sporting moments in American sports history.

OK, I lied... the best motivation would probably be facing your own mortality. The second-best motivation would be trying to look good to the opposite sex

Salsa Dancing in Sydney

Salsa dancing in sydney
There are a lot of ways to stay in shape and the fact is, many of them are boring and painful. The key to enjoying fitness is to find something that you don't mind doing, or is so much fun that you forget the time.

Dancing is an excellent way to expend energy while having a blast... dancing with a partner makes it a pseudo-romantic game, while the music moves your body without you thinking about it

Hockey Fighting

Hockey fight!
Growing up in the icy fields of the Canadian North, you'd think that I'd be a fantastic skater.

Not true, actually. I barely learned how to stay upright on skates, letting the bracing prairie wind propel me across the ice-rink, while the other Canadian kids twirled around me like autumn leaves whipping past the base of a creaking oak tree

Why Swimming is Good For You

November 26th 2006 00:51
Why Swimming is Good For You

Our bodies are about 70% water; and while the lungs are filled with the air, the body is slightly less dense than the surrounding water, which exerts a buoyant force on it. So to stay afloat all that is required is a slight propelling of water downward relative to the body. Because we are buoyant in the water, there is less force placed upon our joints and bones during swimming. Think about the graceful movement of a swimmer doing freestyle along a swimming pool – it’s such a majestic and seemingly easy form of exercise in comparison to the hard jolt of running on a bitumen road.

Casual Walking Pointless For Exercise

If walking is the only form of exercise you partake in, make sure you don’t just go about it casually. Research (and commonsense) shows that a casual stroll around the garden is doing jack-all for your health.

The Psychological Benefits of Exercise

The Psychological Benefits of Exercise

We all know that the physical benefits of exercise are plentiful: losing weight, gaining muscle, maintaining a healthy heart, etc. But what about the effects that working out has on your mind? I know that when I’ve had a hard day and come home dead tired, that’s when I need exercise the most. It may sound stupid, and that I want to drain myself even further; but on the contrary, I get off the treadmill totally refreshed and revitalized - like I’ve just had 10 hours sleep and a cold swim!
