Health benefits of Asparagus

Asparagus

While the smell or taste of Asparagus may not be for everyone, there is no denying that they are one of the healthiest foods on the planet, jam-packed from top to bottom with nutrients and minerals such as Vitamin K, Folate, Folic acid, potassium, dietary fiber, rutin and many many more.

So even if you hate the taste of asparagus with a passion, try and incorporate it into your diet once in a while. Try it stir-fried with other ingredients so that its 'aroma' and taste aren't as 'pungent' as it would be on its own.

Asparagus

Once you start getting asparagus in your diet, you will start reaping the full benefits of this healthy vegetable which includes:

- Birth defect prevention: eat asparagus during pregnancy or during conceiving to help prevent birth defects such as spina bifida
- Helps with cardiovascular problems
- Helps ease menstrual cramps and fertility problems
- Great for the gastrointestinal tract and colon
- Increases the success rate of chemotherapy
- Good anti-inflammatory properties
- Detoxification
- Lowers cholesterol
- Great for kidneys

Asparagus

- Helps prevent bladder and urinary tract infections
- Helps prevent multiple sclerosis
- Helps prevent scurvy
- Lowers high blood pressure
- Helps prevent cataracts
plus many more health benefits.

When choosing Asparagus stalks (which should be available all-year round), they should be rounded, and neither fat nor twisted. Firm, thin stems with deep green or purplish closed tips are good signs of freshness.

I love love love asparagus. It smells and tastes delicious but you need a WW2 gas mask to wee afterwards. LOL. My fave way to eat them is steamed sitting on top of a ham steak with a poached and unhealthily smothered in hollandaise sauce. OMG - I am so hungry now. Not fair.
