Eating Healthy

Canola Oil

In order to eat healthy, the way in which you prepare, marinate and cook your food also needs to be done healthily so choosing the right cooking oil is very important.

Generally speaking, vegetable and peanut oil are said to be less healthy because they are unable to reduce LDL cholesterol and boost HDL cholesterol, the healthy type of cholesterol.

Which is why canola ("Canadian oil, low acid") oil is generally regarded as one of the healthiest choices of oil because it is low in saturated fat and rich in monounsaturated fats.

Virgin and extra-virgin olive oils are also said to be healthy for these exact properties.

But which is the healthiest of them all?

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The latest research shows that virgin and extra-virgin olive oils have an edge in the health stakes. Produced purely by mechanically pressing the oil from olives, with no chemical processing a type of antioxidant called polyphenols is found in spades. Naturally found in olives (in red wine and green tea too), polyphenols mop up free radicals before they can oxidize LDL (oxidation makes LDL even more damaging to arteries).

For those on a budget: Canola
For those that don't mind spending big: Virgin/Extra-virgin

Having just been to the supermarket it's so hard to eat healthy while being really tight with money. It's funny we all know we need to eat healthy but those foods that are unhealthy are actually cheaper!

What dillemma. Thanks for the post! I'll put Canola oil on my next shopping list.
