What is lemon detox diet?

Lemon Detox Diet

With the weather getting warmer by the day and summer fast approaching, it makes sense that many people are trying to get back into shape and lose the excess 'spare tyre' around the waist from one too many cups of hot chocolate over the winter months.

So, now that you have made up your mind to get in shape for summer to look all buff in a pair of budgie smugglers or sexy string bikini, it's time to work out which type of diet would most suit your lifestyle and needs.

Hot String Bikini

One type of diet, most recently popularised by singer Beyonce Knowles, is the Lemon Detox Diet which she used to get in shape for her role in the 2006 movie Dream Girls.

This diet is essentially part of the Master Cleanse which involves no consumption of solid foods but instead, drinking a concoction of lemon juice, maple syrup, water (bottled) and cayenne pepper.

By consuming this mixture, the body is said to be detoxified as the drink eliminates toxins and congestion that have built up in the body over time while still delivering essential vitamins and minerals and some sugars to the body.

Budgie Smuggler

Typically speaking, the recommended duration of this diet is a minimum of 10 days to allow the body to adapt, detoxify and thus resulting in weight loss. It is, however, very common for people to stay on the diet for extended periods of time.

Some critics claim the diet to be 'just another fad diet' with starvation as the main contributing factor to any weight loss. Thus, short-term weight loss will be apparent but will lead to long(er) term weight gain plus other side effects.

As with most diets, some work and some don't and while this lemon detox diet has proven results, results may vary.

these diets probably work, but are as appealing as having hot iron on ones behind all day long.

The Lemon Detox Diet does wonders for those whom follw the program. I did it for 8 days and never felt this good in years. Post detox I have kept the 6kg off and I am so energetic and can easily say no to fatty foods.

Hi peoples,

I too tried the Lemon Detox. I must say that I was pretty suprised at the results after only 5 days. I wanted in continue but I had a big fat greek wedding and I had to put it on hold. I think thats the good thing about this program. You can set it to your social needs.

Regards,

Mia

There aren't any foods that you're supposed to eat per se, but you can't go wrong with a healthy and balanced diet.

That's no good! This goes to show that not all diets are suitable for everyone. I hope you're feeling better now.

Hi Arnold,
The most probable reason why you felt sick after 6 days and the fact that you put weight on is because you did not eliminate properly. The key to the detox is elimination using the senna tea and sea salt flush. Symptoms will persist if the elimination process is lacking and will cause you to put on weight.
This is the most common mistake people make on the program.
Its simple to do but you have to do it properly.

Just wondering... What about all our RDI's that arent included in this diet! What about iron, dietary fibre etc? Surely it must not be good to go without these for long periods of time... We need these things for normal bodily functioning...

Well I managed 4 days, and am now in the process of coming off the diet.
I dont really feel any different to before, except hungry!! I have tried everything - even adding extra syrup to my drink - it only fills me up for about 20 mins, and then I am so hungry I'm doubled over in pain.
I have been doing everything to the letter, including the salt water & senna tea. I feel fine, but cant handle being STARVING for so long.
I cant wait to CHEW something again. haha.
Has anyone else felt hungry while on the diet?? I know its supposed to keep me full, but just didn't work for me.

I completed the 7 day lemon detox in May 2008, it was a great challenge to me as I was a big eater love my food, beer, wine and home made cakes, but I made a positive move to give it a go after the 3rd day it got easier and easier and I started to enjoy it I placed my detox drink in the fridge so it was like a iced lemon tea for me, I did all the steps they told me the salt, lemon drink, water and cup of tea at night.

The results amazing weighted 84.5kg when I finished was 79kg, I kept all the weight off by healthy eating little exercise and less beer,

I had so much more energy and joined a gym and tried to attend at least 3-5 sessions a week. I dropped my weight again from healthy eating and exercise from 79kg to 75kg over 2 months.

It’s that time again I have just finished my 7 day lemon detox again being the 16th September 08... so much easier the second time around ... I have dropped my weight down from 75kg to 71.2 kg so over the moon.

Yea

The next 2 months will work hard to break under the 69KG weight range and then in December will do the 14 day detox which will be great I am already looking forward to it...

More energy and feel fantastic and just gives me a little push in the right direction..

Good luck everyone..

I am on day 3 of the program, and must admit it is a challenge, but have surprised myself by sticking to it this long. I have already lost 2.5kg (and I'm not really overweight). So I have gone from 69.5kg to 67kg. Am planning on just doing the 5 days this time, so will be interested to see what the final result is. I am OK with the not eating thing until I see or smell food...I disappear to the shower when my partner eats! Wish me luck for the last 2 days!

hey guys,

I'm about to start the detox and I take a daily multi-vitamin. Can I continue to take it or will it have a negative result on the overall detox?

thanks in advance!

If you read the book that goes with the starter kit, it says that taking any additional vitamins may impede progress, but I'm skeptical that a multi-vitamin could make a lot of difference to success or failure. I went on this detox in May, after watching my friend do it - she lost 5 kgs, and sung the diet's praises. I was hungry for the first few days, (harder when you are still preparing really yummy food for your family!), and felt really cold some of the time. From about Day 3-5, I got quite bad headaches at about 3am, and even though the book says don't take anything for it (just "use lavender oil"), I took Panadol. I don't believe it made any difference to my outcome at all. I did have a lot more energy come Day 5 and it definitely got easier. I lost 5 kgs too and felt great. But I fell back into bad habits, and the kgs did come back - very gradually. My friend has kept off all of her weight. I am on Day 8 of detox again, and it's been easier this time round. I have lost 3-4 kgs so far, and will definitely go to 10 days, but I hope not to go through it again. What this does is hopefully re-program your thinking about portion size, the kinds of food you've been eating, and how much exercise you get. I know where I fell down last time - I got complacent - and hopefully will get my act together this time - to think before I put something in my mouth, and move a lot more!

If you really can't handle the zero food, like me, eat one meal a day, just make it steamed veges/fruit and a small piece of grilled chicken. It makes the hunger easier to manage, and you still get to eat a meal with the family.

The results are a bit slower, but Rome wasn't built in a day...

I've heard both negative and positive results about this diet. I'm looking to do it for myself but i'm also a bit scared that I'll just end up being one of those 'Don't do this it didn't work!' kind of people.
I'm willing to give it a go, because my body hasn't been responding the way it used to over the past couple of months. That's the main reason, and the weight loss would probably be a bonus!
But I'm just wondering.. what does this laxative tea taste like? And i'm confused as to which one i'm supposed to be getting.
and is it a big requirement to use bottled water?

I have read that lots of people dont feel hungry, however i can assure you, all i think about is food... I will stick it out for 2 more days and hope the food cravings go away soon.

I am on day 6 of the program, first two days were horrible, the headaches, the hunger, the fatigue, and I was so cold. I woke up on day 3 and felt excellent, not even hungy! I have lost 4 kg already. I am planning to stay on it for 14days, Is this safe? i read somewhere that a woman did it for 20 days! its just so easy and effective for weight loss, When do I need to stop?

On second day, I have had a slight headache all day but not really hungry just craving eating as I often eat out of boredom, I have not given in to temption yet, I have made it this far so Im not going to cave. I'm hoping to get to 10 days. my only fear is that the weight will come back on double like after most diets ( so I have heard as this is my first time dieting). Actually the eating part is easy to control I really struggled day one with not going to a freinds and have a sharing a bottle of wine.

hey guys i have to started the lemon diet but i didnt know about this one, i just simply drink i glass of lemon juice early in the morning go to gym eat less amount of food and then drink senna tea at night, it does work honestly i have been fat all my life and i didnt think i would world until one of my friends told me about, actually i was told about this diet manyyyy years ago, and it quite ancient in india alot of people do it and it does works, as for feeling hungry i dont any more (im a big eater), i eat breakfast after gym and i barley feel hungry for lunch or even dinner but i still do eat it but little amounts. also make sure you do drink senna herbal tea, you do feel a little discomfort but you get use to it, you feel so much better about your self and your motivated to do more, i was 97kg and now 94kg and i cant wait to loose more, i know there are definitley people out their like me who are lazy and dont really stick to things for long but if you stick to this it will really work wonders...good luck to the people trying it!!..ohh i drink about 3 glasses a day, i mix it with a little water so its not so bitter...

What is wrong with you all??? You cant even survive one or 2 days without moaning like 2 year olds...Were is your 'will', your 'edge', your conquiering spirit...man, are U a blob of jelly quiviering on the floor or what???...

I went on a dark grape and garlic fast for 27 days, with regular saunas and survived quite well. Lost about 25 kilos, felt detoxed, however a lot of muscle is also lost. I would take whey protein powder at least once a day at night as well.

I enjoyed the process immensely...hehe... BOOOOO....

Comment by Anon Australian

I didnt take any protein on that 27 day fast, and lost muscle...so, the next time I fast like that, for the sake of not losing muscle, I would take whey protein at night.

I suggest good quality whey protein, which is quite healthy....for any kind of fast over a week, or your body will scavange muscle from places such as those that support your spine etc, which are hard to replace...

...think about it....

...perhaps modifying this lemon detox with a gall bladder flush might work killing 2 birds with 1 stone. sic (eliminates gall stones in some)

ie: by taking one tablespoon of virgin olive oil every 15 mins after a sip of lemon....for a DAY....

...swallowing a teaspoon of epsom salts with the senna tea might also increase 'regularity' and give a 'deeper cleanse'....hmmm

...drinking apple juice 3 days beforehand is a consideration some have given to the gallstone removal process....

Hello,
I am 22, 5"9 (175cm) and weigh 82kg...I'm around a size 12-14 and although I do not look "fat" I am quite over weight in the legs and butt.....

I guess I just wanted to see how much weight people similiar to my size have lost.

I have to say that I do exercise and love healthy food but over the holidays got a little crazy and am looking to inspire myself and get a kick start...

I have my pack coming in the mail this week and I hope to do well....really just want to stop feeling so sluggish and congested!!

Good luck and well done to everyone ese.

Hello All. I started this today. So far I managed the senna tea no problems, the litre of salt water was a little difficult but i managed to drink the litre. Then I got to the liquid. Perhaps I added too much of the pepper but my mouth is burning a little. I found it quite putrid to be honest and after drinking a glass of it my tummy is still rumbling a bit from hunger. But I'll keep on trucking and hopefully it will get a little better and the results will be worth it! In addition I've also been a smoker for 10 years and using this as a chance to give that up too, my thought is if I can go a week without smoking I can keep it going after the detox. Luck to everyone else currently on the detox!

Hey There.

So I got my pack in the mail.

I got through Day 1. I found I was thinking alot about food but was not necessarily hungry. Even though food was surrounding me at work, on tv in my magazines ahhh!!

I did the salt water flush yesterday, drinking salt water did not bother me I dont know why. The Senna tea is also quite nice but I am only up to Day 2 so Im not sure what they are supposed to do.

Today is Day 2 and it is 3.30 in the afternoon normally I am ravenous at this time but I seem to be going ok.

I am not going to lie, it is tough not because you are physically hungry-because I am not but because of the physical act of eating. I am starting to realise that I have been eating for all the wrong reasons.

I am aiming for 5 days at this stage....

I have not weighed myself either. I dont want to be disappointed.

Hi Anonymous,

I also had trouble not eating. I have a job that demands totaly mental attention and also quite a lot of physical work too.

The first day was fine but the second day and each day from then on I have been having a healthy salad half way through the day and some fruit here and there and lots of water!

I know that it does not count as the full detox but I have already noticed my skin is not as puffy and my pants are looser. It may be water weight but I have lost 3kg's since I started.

Good Luck!!

also i dont want to loose weight and have like excess skin especially since i have quite large breasts, i only weight 64kg i just want to loose roughly 5-10 kg so is the lemon detox still a good idea for me ?

hi everyone,
I have been on the diet for 6 days now and have lost 5kg! i am happy to report that the only 'headache' i have had was yesterday, but very brief, thankfully! i havent been drinking the salt water because i just couldnt do it, i got half way through it and wanted to puke! so im just having a tea in the morning too.

i am interested though if anyone knows of any short or long term dangers from the diet because someone told me today that 'whats good for you' show reported bad kidney function after the diet amoungst other things....

i also want to lose as much weight as possible and stay on the detox for 14 days...has anyone got any comments or advie about this please?????

also reading through the other posts, i have to agree that i have felt more engerised than i have in a long time, not hungry at all, the only 'problem' is that im finking it hard to sleep!

good luck to everyone!

Hi anonymous

It a crash diet which means it upset blood sugar, sodium levels in the body, water retention or increase blood osmolarity and muscle breakdown ,all those problems can lead to acute kidney failure.

Depriving the body of the vitamins and minerals we get from food can  weaken the body’s ability to fight infections and inflammations

people with diabetes, heart or kidney disease or women who are pregnant or nursing shouldn't try them, experts say. Children, teens, older adults or people with certain digestive conditions should also steer clear. So before going on this diet you need to check with your physcian first

Finally your body does a perfectly good job of getting rid of toxins on its own.

Hi Everyone

I am on day 7th day of this diet, feeling good, its sickening how we can stay 7 days without eating or chewing anything and not feel hungry!
I am a little disappointed on the weight loss, it's been quite slow for me, only lost 8 pounds (3.6kgs) so far.
The salt water shake doesnt bother me at all, its actually a nice change of taste other than the just sweet syrup all the time.
Its nice to read your reviews, hope everyone can stay on it, so far I would say it works!

Hi, I'm at night of day five, just had my last bit of lemon drink and feeling full now. But all day today I had such cravings.... then I got surprised with an early period. So maybe that's why I had such cravings. I don't know if I have lost any weight, don't have anything to weigh myself with, just going by feeling. But I am feeling pretty good. My normal back aches are gone, and I have had only one headache. The kids can wear me out a bit faster at the moment and I'm not doing regular excersise, swimming in the pool is about it at the moment. I need to loose weight, so I'm determind to stay on it for 10 days all up, even though every kind of food looks totally delliscious at the moment.

Hey!! Have just done 7 day detox with my partner. Again as others have said first 2 days were hell but it has gotten easier since!!
I dropped from 66.8kg to 62.2 and my partner has gone from 92.5 to 86.9kg. Most impressive for both of us though is we are fitting into clothes that we hadnt been able to get into for ages!!! I think it was easier doing it with someone as we helped keep each other motivated. I also found i wasnt starving but more missed the physical act of eating!! We are very happy with the results and are hoping our weight stays off!!! Will def be doing it again sometime next year1!!

Hi all
Am on Day 5 now and feeling good. the hunger thing was never really an issue for me - I have started exercising again, an hour here and there of relatively gentle cardio helps keep things ticking over ie swimming, bike riding tennis etc. I have lost 4 kg so far but yes the challenge is how to keep it off when the metabolism gets back on track. The key is to eat for energy - this is the opportunity to detox and change the way you think about food. This is the single most hardest thing! I am aiming for 7 days but might stretch that out a bit if I feel. Had an awful headache Day 2 - giving the coffee and beer a miss has caused me great sadness! Stick with it - it's not for long and just be very careful to only eat raw/steamed vegies and some nice clear soups for a while when coming off it. Ease your way back in to it. Don't binge to celebrate! You'll feel terrible! Good luck.

Thank you for this quetion . If you decided to start detox diet you should put in your mind that there are a number of unhealthy habbits and food that you will have to give up like smoking that's why you need to consult your physcian to put for you careful plan to quit smoking ..,However, detox diet is for detoxification not deprivation that's why if you are a heavy smoker or take drugs regularly, it will be a huge shock to the system to give up at the same time as detoxing. Take one step at a time - giving up your particular vice will be a detox in itself.
Finally I hope I answered you good
thanks again

I am nearing the end of day 2 on the lemon detox and apart from some lethargy and light headedness I feel ok. I haven't been bothered by food cravings and although I don't like citrus fruit I am finding the drink "bearable".
I did the 1L salt flush this morning and it hit me while I was taking the kids to the train station #omg - tomorrow I'll wait until after taking them - I didn't think I'd make it home!! #.
I'm looking forward to being really healthy on the inside although my diet wasn't so bad to begin with and I was walking for 1hour a day. Personally I think the people who have the greatest trouble with the lemon detox #the duration, hunger pains and headaches# are possibly people who were already quite unfit and ate really badly #including smoking etc#. Could be wrong??
Anyway, looking forward to day 3 and will keep you posted.

I have a concern of gaining double the weight back once I finish the detox plan. I've heard that if you stick to a good healthy diet and workout the weight will stay off. But then I've also heard if you starve the body then all of a sudden eat solid food it will be a fast weight gain regardless of what you eat. I need a confirmation before I start the diet!

Hi
it's true detox diet is one of those so called crash diet ..it's only good for those people who need to loose weight quickly but under a close supervesion of their doctor .But then no doctor will reconend such diet .In this diet you don't eat anything for the entire 7-day detox plan pushing your body into near-starvation levels, then when the user starts eating again, the weight piles back on, even faster than they lost it due to the body invoking the 'Anti-Starvation Response'.

Moreover to effectively loss body fat you need to exercise (to maintain muscle mass) and have a reduced calorie intake. On diet such as this within a couple of days it would be near impossible to exercise effectively. You would simply have no energy.  Not only that your ability to concentrate would be quickly jeopardized as your brain needs glucose to function – the Lemon Detox Diet will eventually starve your brain of this vital fuel.

So to sum up the results that you will get are as following

1-Fast Short-term weight loss
2-Long-term weight gain (predominately body fat).
3- side effects (from minor concerns such as mood swings to potentially significant medical complications).
An inability to exercise effectively.

Its day 4 now and all i can think about is food. For everyone who cant stand drinking 2Litres of salt water, what i do is put 2 teaspoons in a glass of warm water and take a few zips followed by a glass of water everytime. It gets it out of the way. I hope this works because Im really forcing myself to continue. 3 more days i might as well stick to it.

This is the stupidest thing I have EVER heard of. My sister tried it.. I refused to. She's gotten dark under the eyes, headaches, nausea and more. AND she gained all the weight back and more. ARE PEOPLE REALLY STUPID ENOUGH TO DO THIS??? It brings your metabolism to a screeching hault, meaning your immediatlely going to put the weight back on. Eat vegetables, some grains and stick to water. No calories or fat. This diet just sounds like something for people who want a quick and LAZY wait out. I just stuck to regular excericise and healthy eating and I can maintain a really healthy figure and not have to starve!! I"m 5"9 and 130 pounds, and yes I have a flat stomach and EAT ON A REGULAR BASIS. Don't listen to some stupid fad, go on a regular diet and for god sakes don't starve yourself!!!!!!

Hey well i started the detox today. And have heard about people piling on the weight as soon as they eat..thats because im guessing they went straight to eating normal course meals and not introducing the food slowly into your body. Also i have heard that people do go through it and keep it of im guessing they had better results because they exercised and didnt just go back into eating ice cream and chocolate like they did before. if you stick to a plan after of eating little and introducing the food slowly i dont see why you would re gain all the weight. Am i right or wrong? someone that has experienced it please share your info with me if you kept it off WITH a diet and not just going back into your pigging out habbits thanks

Hi, I did the detox 2 yrs ago before I got pregnant and lost 7 Kg in 5 days. It was hard yakka for the first day or so but it wasn't so bad after that, its quite surprising. I've now stopped breastfeeding and thinking of doing it again to get the baby fat off, I just am not sure how I'm going to go with the headaches and hunger for the first couple of days now plus looking after a baby. Has anybody done it when working/looking after children etc?
