dementia and lifestyle

If  people were to follow such advice, millions worldwide could avoid or postpone the debilitating conditions in old age.

It's well known now that how much intellectual exercise you  takes has an enormous effect on your likelihood of developing dementia.

A recent study included 1,433 healthy people over age 65 living in the south of France. They underwent cognitive testing at the start of the study and again two, four and seven years later. The participants also provided medical history and personal information on diet, education, monthly income, alcohol consumption and tobacco use.

The researchers concluded that people who do not read often were 18 per cent more likely to develop "cognitive impairment or dementia".Although the bare statistics indicated intellectual activity was the most important factor, there are still no available data in this study or other  studies to determined how much a good reading score was based on genetics and how much on upbringing.

Another important factor is depression .Those with depression were 10 per cent more likely to develop dementia ; while those who ate fruit and vegetables less than twice a day were 6.5 per cent more likely to do so.

A similar study 2009 done by  researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm in Sweden ,they have found that a laid back outlook, combined with an active lifestyle and outgoing personality may contribute to warding off the onset of dementia. Also they  found that "people who were socially isolated or inactive but relaxed had a 50 percent lower risk of developing dementia compared with people who were isolated and prone to distress. The dementia risk was also 50 percent lower for people who were outgoing and relaxed compared to those who were outgoing but prone to distress," according to a statement.

So in conclusion, Dementia is one of the most common diseases in the elderly. The good news is lowering the incidence of dementia might be in your hand  . Try your best to deal with stress. Be optimistic. If you have depression get medical help for it. Boost your  education. And increase your fruit and vegetables.
