Liquorice Health Benefits

Liquorice
The active ingredient in the liquorice herb is glycyrrhizin, a sweetener more than 50 times as sweet as sucrose (sucrose is esssentially cane sugar; glucose plus fructose). The most popular liquorice lollies in the UK are the absolutely scrumptious Liquorice Allsorts; whereas in continental Europe the far stronger, saltier, mouth-watering delights prevail.
Medicinal Uses:
• Liquorice is the second most prescribed herb in China followed by ginseng, where it is suggested for treatment of the spleen, liver and kidney.
• The Japanese use a liquorice preparation to treat hepatitis.
• It can be as effective as codeine, and safer, when used as a cough suppressant.
• Liquorice can be used as a mild laxative.
• But the most common medical use for liquorice is for treating upper respiratory ailments including coughs, hoarseness, sore throat, and bronchitis.
But before you go and guzzle down a packet of Liquorice Allsorts, be aware that the health benefits of liquorice are gained from taking the natural liquorice root. Packaged forms of liquorice contain many not-so-healthy additives. Downing a bag of Liquorice Allsorts will most likely just give you a sugar high due to the sugar in the candy layers and the added sugar in the liquorice layers themselves. Even ‘Traditional Liquorice’ that you buy in a brown paper bag has more flour, sugar, glucose syrup and vegetable oil that actual liquorice extracts.
