Mead to help get your groove on

April 28th 2008 05:32
Mead Christmas

Whoa - scientists in London are exploring the possibility that mead, an alcoholic honey drink, could be used to reinvigorate married sex lives.

Mead is "a fermented alcoholic beverage made of honey, water, and yeast." according to Wikipedia, which also suggests that the earliest reference to it was in Vedic times, around 1500 BC.

Honestly, it sounds delicious, though it's usually associated with those Live-Action Dungeons and Dragons matches, where they'd relax after slaying trolls in the dungeons of Yengor by quaffing large flagons of mead.

I'm reminded about Fear of Girls:

Well, luckily for those LARPers, the Royal Society of Chemistry in London is investigating the powers of mead to aide a healthy sex life!

"Researchers are seeking the help of prospective honeymooners willing to drink mead every evening for 30 days after they exchange their vows.

They will select one couple who will be asked to keep a nightly record of the effects or otherwise of the ancient brew. "

One couple? C'mon, Royal Society Fellows! You've got a sample size of one?

Health benefits of green tea

Green tea
L-R: Green tea, powder and leaves

Green tea has been enjoyed by people in China and Japan for over 4000 years and is arguably one of the most health beneficial drinks on the planet.

The secret behind the health benefits of green tea is its abundance of the antioxidant known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This powerful antioxidant is lost in other tea leaves during the fermentation process but retained in green tea leaves because the leaves are steamed, baked, or pan heated to prevent oxidation.

EGCG has been found to be particularly effective in lowering bad cholesterol (LDL), stopping unnatural formation of blood clots, reducing high blood pressure, destroying free radicals, lowering bloody sugar levels, boosting the immune system and stimulating metabolism.

There is also strong evidence that green tea can reduce the risk of cancers - bladder, colon, esophageal, pancreas, rectum, and stomach - by as much as 60% due to its EGCG richness which inhibits and kills the growth of cancer cells without harming the healthy cells.

The only drawback for green tea is that it contains caffeine but in relatively small amounts - less than half the amount found in coffee of similar portions.

Health benefits of Kiwifruit

Kiwi Fruit

Did you know that the kiwifruit is very rich in many vitamins and minerals? In fact, it is so jam packed with nutrients that it ranks as the most nutrient-rich of the top 26 fruits consumed in the world today.

It is one of the richest sources of vitamin C (in terms of density) and has banana-rivalling amounts of potassium and trace amounts of vitamin A (beta carotene) plus various other vitamins and minerals such as inositol.

Children who consume kiwifruit as part of their regular diet of fruit and vegies have demonstrated additional health benefits to the respiratory tract while adults who enjoy their kiwis will be glad to know that an antimutagenic component present in the fruit helps prevent the mutations of genes that may initiate the cancer process.

Kiwifruits are also high in dietary fibre which helps diabetics by controlling sugar levels and helping to expel toxic compounds in the colon.

Other specific health conditions which kiwifruits are found to benefit are:

- Depression
- Eye Health/Macular Degeneration
- Hypertension
- Impotence
- Stress Reduction
- Weight Control

Kiwifruits tend to be at their best during the summer months as they grow in temperate climates with adequate summer heat but are typically enjoyed all year round.

So there....who would have guessed a fruit as small as a large hen's egg could be so full of healthy vitamins and minerals?

Swiss army water bottle
When bottled water started making it to the scene in the 90s, fitness experts went crazy. Finally, here was a way to get people to drink water, but still give them status while charging them ridiculous amounts for it.

Bottled water sold like crazy. It turn out, most of us don't really like soda and sugary juices - we like water, but we're hesitant to stick our mouths near the gummed up public drinking spouts. Have you seen those things
