Portfolio Partners Spring Cycle - THIS SUNDAY
A post for entrants...
The final countdown has begun for the 12th annual Portfolio Partners Spring Cycle, 2006. Up to 10,000 riders will get on their bikes this Sunday in support of the National Heart Foundation. This year’s five rider options – from 5km to 50km – ensure a great ride for any cyclist, of any age or expertise. The event aims to be great fun, a healthy day out and most of all a SAFE ride.
Unlike the City2Surf, participants have less control over the speed of their movements and the risk of being injured is much higher. So please make it safe for yourself and for others by following some simple advice:
1. Do NOT go fast down hills: this is a family ride for all ages and NOT a competition so you won’t be benefiting anyone by riding dangerously at any time, and especially down hills. Do this in your own time when there are not thousands of other riders surrounding you.
2. Signal when turning: If you are going to make any turns remember to signal. You may know exactly what you will be doing but others won’t. Act like you’re driving a car, indicate and check your blind spots.
3. Keep your fluids up: Sometimes it is difficult to notice you’re becoming dehydrated with the adrenalin pumping and the excitement of it all. Make use of the four rest stops, all which have water refill stations, bike mechanical assistance, toilet facilities, first aid and some food stalls.
4. Although it seems like it will be overcast on the day, put on some sunscreen before the ride and reapply on your breaks. Wearing sunnies will protect your eyes from the glare and from any debris that could fly towards your face during the ride.
These are only a few pointers but use your common sense and make sure you thoroughly read your Ride Guide to get the full benefit of Sunday’s event. Please consider others and be careful on the road. Remember bikes have no seat belts, airbags or crumple zones: there is NOTHING between you and the hard surface of the tarmac.
Happy and Safe Riding… see you there!
