Chinese Milk Scandal Escalates
September 29th 2008 03:52
The milk poisoning scandal in China has gone from bad to worse with reports that as many as 54,000 children have fallen ill from drinking the toxic products.
A total of 22 milk powder producing companies including Sanlu, China's largest manufacturer of infant milk powder, have now admitted they added the industrial chemical melamine to their products to make them appear more protein rich than they actually were. And now the Chinese Health Ministry has admitted 13,000 children have been hospitalised - more than double the number initially thought.
Children, whose tiny bodies aren't able to cope with the chemical, causes painful kidney stones that could eventually lead to kidney failure, of which has taken the lives of four infants.
The Chinese government has been widely condemned for their handling of this scandal with reports that the hosting of the Beijing Olympics meant the situation was suppressed for six weeks.
