The Death Of Natasha Richardson

The death of actress Natasha Richardson, following what at first appeared to be a minor fall while skiing was really heartbreaking . One instant the 45-year-old actress is dusting off powder ,kidding after falling on a beginner's trail during a ski lesson at a Quebec ski resort, after that she's on life support in a New York hospital with a traumatic brain injury.
Tragic as her death was, it's a sad testament that Richardson's story already may have sparked more buzz about traumatic brain injury.
A traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
" is caused by a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain".
The effect of a TBI may range from, a mild brief change in mental function of the brain" and alters the way one thinks, speaks, feels and reacts emotionally."or consciousness to “severe,” i.e., an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia after the injury."
Sometimes it takes days or weeks following the injury until Symptoms of a TBI to appear or may even be missed as people may look fine even though they may act or feel differently. We should never forget that 50,000 of TBI victims die .For that reason TBI cases should be taken seriously and even if the patient seemed to be fine ,they should be kept for observation in specialized trauma care unit for a while till the specializes team is comfortable to send the them home.
The The leading causes of TBI are: Falls (28%);Motor vehicle-traffic crashes (20%); and Struck by/against events (19%).Blasts are a leading cause of TBI for active duty military personnel in war zones. So as you can tell prevention TBI is the main issue here; for example; wearing of safety helmets during sport activities that carry a risk of falling, wearing a seat belt during driving,Buckling your child into an age-appropriate child safety sea, Keeping firearms and bullets stored in a locked cabinet or safe when not in use and to improve the technology of battlefield medicine allow war fighters to survive.
Finally let's all remember Natasha Richardson, who was a Tony award winning actress of film and stage, wife of actor Liam Neeson and mother to their two teenage sons.
She died in a New York hospital on Wednesday, surrounded by her family, including her husband, her mother Vanessa Redgrave, and her sister Joely Richardson, said the Daily Telegraph.
