Athletes using impotency drugs for performance boost
June 23rd 2008 23:30
As the title states, anti-doping authorities are becoming a bit worried that elite athletes are using the impotency drugs such as Viagra and Cialis to boost their performances - just not in the way they were intended, unfortunately.
Drugs such as viagra is just a brand name while its generic name is actually Sildenafil citrate, a compound which not only treats male erectile dysfunction but also aids the delivery of oxygen to muscles.
It is thought that the help in delivery of oxygen to muscles could be beneficial for athletes in elite competition, at altitude or in polluted environments like the Beijing Olympics. And this might help explain the increasing traces of sildenafil in the urine tests of athletes.
While it can't be ruled out that some athletes might really be using the drug to boost sexual performance (erectile dysfunction typically affects elder males and not the young and fit athletic types), the reason why an athlete might be lacking sexual prowess is because of other doping agents they could be taking.
The World Anti-Doping Agency is already studying these claims but the outcome is unlikely to be heard until after the Beijing Olympic Games this year.
I don't see how running with a stiffy would shave milliseconds off a sprinter's time in the 100 metres dash! It might help with the photo finish though if that's what it came down to! What about swimming? Perhaps it will give 'buoyancy' a whole new meaning? [abc.net.au]

I use coffee. Caffeine is a drug, I admit it.
