Health benefits of Vitamin E

Vitamin E rich foods

It seems that when it comes to vitamins, the benefits and importance of 'C' is always on everyone's lips.

While there's no denying that Vitamin C is one of the most important of all vitamins, one vitamin equally as important while serving similar purposes is Vitamin E.

As an antioxidant, Vitamin E is essential for protecting body tissue from the damage of oxidation by neutralising free radicals in the body that cause tissue and cellular damage. It is important in the formation of red blood cells and also contributes to a healthy circulatory system.

Vitamin E is also great for cholesterol as it prevents it from being converted to plaque which thickens the blood vessels and leads to stroke and heart disease.

Skin and lip protection are also well-known health benefits of vitamin E where it is used to help heal minor wounds without scarring and to soothe and heal broken or stressed skin tissue. Women also use Vitamin E to help minimise the appearance of wrinkles.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is found in a variety of dietary sources and they are:

- Apples
- Avocado
- Bananas
- Blackberries
- Egg yolk
- Kiwi
- Liver
- Nuts
- Peanut butter
- Vegetable oil and margarine
- Wheat germ
- Whole grain products

Generally speaking, women need 8mg and men need 10mg of vitamin E daily. Thankfully, it is almost impossible to have a vitamin E deficiency due to its fat-soluble properties, which means the vitamin is stored in the fat tissues of the body for a few days to up to six months.

It is, however, possible to overdose on vitamin E because its fat-soluble properties can sometimes mean an excessive amount of it is stored in the liver, leading to health problems such as nausea and digestive tract problems.

For the best health/medical advice, always consult your health care professional.

What are your thoughts on Vitamin E in creams...I have tried a few but they vary greatly...is it enough to say it CONTAINS vitamin E or does it really not mean anything...i.e - it may do the same job as a cream with shae butter or jojoba?

I guess I am interested to know what you would recommend?

That's a tough question.

From my understanding, vitamin E offers skin and lip protection in the form of healing minor wounds without scarring and to soothe and heal broken or stressed skin tissue.

I'm not sure whether shae butter or jojoba offers the healing and soothing properties as vitamin E.
