Health benefits of Zinc

November 15th 2007 10:15

In this next chapter of healthy vitamins and minerals we discuss the health benefits of zinc.

Zinc is a mineral that is absolutely vital to healthy living and many biological functions such as immune resistance, wound healing, digestion, reproduction, physical growth, diabetes control, taste and smell. Even a small zinc deficiency can cause health problems, including decreased immunity to diseases such as the common cold.

By boosting the immune system thus improving white blood cell count, zinc may also protect against fungal infections and various infectious disorders, such as conjunctivitis and pneumonia.

The mineral plays an important role as a component of about 100 enzymes and the catalysts of enzyme systems regulating cell growth, DNA and protein synthesis, energy metabolism, regulation of gene transcription, hormone levels, and growth factor metabolism by promoting biochemical reactions in the body by stimulating activity.

Good dietary sources of zinc are:

- dairy products
- beans and lentils
- nuts
- wholegrain
- pumpkin seeds
- oysters

There are many over the counter zinc supplements that can be bought and one of them is in the form of zinc picolinate capsules. A single capsule typically contains 30mg of zinc and the recommended dosage is one daily (with meal) as a dietary supplement.

It is possible to take too much zinc, which can have adverse affects on your health so for best results and/or to see what works best for you, please consult your health care professional before adding any zinc supplements to your existing diet.

My girlfriend used to encourage me to have zinc supplements as it improved my libido and performance. Maybe it was a palcebo. I think it worked.
